About the Course

In each session, participants will engage in practices of oral history, autobiography, and creative writing, exploring how personal and communal histories shape our understanding of ourselves and the world.

You’ll learn to gather, craft, and refine stories that capture the essence of your family, weaving these stories into a cohesive narrative that honours both memory and imagination.

Veneta’s approach offers a rich perspective on connecting individual histories to larger social and historical contexts. Drawing from Paul Thompson’s seminal Voices of the Past, which emphasizes the role of oral history in revealing the ideologies that shape our lives, the course encourages you to reflect on the forces that have shaped both your family’s and your own story.

Join this immersive journey into the art of family storytelling, where personal and collective memory meet and bring your family history to life in a way that resonates within the modern British context and within the fabric of contemporary life.

What You’ll Gain:

Story Creation: Craft engaging autobiographical and family stories that capture the essence of your heritage.

Insightful Theory: Understand the theories and methods of oral history and autobiography to enhance the depth of your writing.

Reflective Practice: Explore the ethics and nuances of representing family experiences in both creative and critical formats.

Who Should Join?

This course is ideal for beginners and experienced creative writers who wish to enrich their storytelling skills by exploring the power of the stories embedded within personal histories
